Brownstone Restoration in Bed-Stuy

Master masons restoring Bed-Stuy's historic façades, stoops, and ironwork since 1995. LPC-approved for Brooklyn historic districts.

The Neighborhood

Bedford-Stuyvesant has the largest collection of late-19th-century row houses anywhere in New York — over 8,000 buildings in the broader neighborhood, with multiple LPC historic districts covering the most architecturally significant sections. The Romanesque Revival work on Macon and Decatur Streets is among the finest in the city.

History

Bed-Stuy developed rapidly in the 1880s and 1890s as the BMT elevated rail line opened the area to streetcar commuters. The neighborhood was always more middle-class than Brooklyn Heights or Clinton Hill, but the architectural ambition of the speculative builders here was substantial — particularly during the Romanesque Revival boom of 1885-1895, when rusticated brownstone façades with carved Byzantine ornament became the local signature.

Notable streets: Macon Street, Decatur Street, Hancock Street, Stuyvesant Avenue, Bainbridge Street, Halsey Street.

Specific Challenges

Many Bed-Stuy buildings went through periods of disinvestment in the mid-20th century, which meant deferred maintenance accumulated for decades. Restoration here often involves discovering and reversing 30-50 years of well-meaning but incorrect prior repairs — Portland cement pointing, synthetic stucco coatings, painted-over ironwork. The first phase is often careful removal of inappropriate prior work.

Common Work in Bed-Stuy

Romanesque Revival brownstone restoration with carved ornament reproduction; reversal of synthetic stucco coatings; Portland cement removal and re-repointing with NHL lime; cast iron stoop railing restoration; cornice rebuilding; LPC filings for the protected blocks.

LPC Note Bed-Stuy has multiple separate historic districts — Stuyvesant Heights (1996), Bedford (2011), and an extension covering parts of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights North (2013). Verify your specific address — not all of Bed-Stuy is landmarked, and the rules differ slightly between districts. Read about our LPC process →
