Brownstone Restoration in Fort Greene

Master masons restoring Fort Greene's historic façades, stoops, and ironwork since 1995. LPC-approved for Brooklyn historic districts.

The Neighborhood

Fort Greene is one of Brooklyn's largest historic districts — designated in 1978 and significantly extended in 2012. The neighborhood centers on Fort Greene Park (an Olmsted-designed park completed in 1867) and contains a particularly rich mix of row house styles spanning four decades.

History

Fort Greene developed in two waves. The first, from 1855-1875, brought Italianate and Anglo-Italianate row houses around the new park. The second, from 1885-1900, saw the construction of Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne houses on the eastern edges. The two eras coexist on the same blocks, which is why Fort Greene streets are visually more varied than Park Slope or Cobble Hill.

Notable streets: Carlton Avenue, Adelphi Street, South Oxford Street, Cumberland Street, Washington Park.

Specific Challenges

Many Fort Greene brownstones have unusual front-yard configurations including original cast iron fences with extraordinarily fine ornamental detail. The neighborhood also has a higher proportion of free-standing or end-of-row houses than other brownstone neighborhoods, meaning side façades (often less weather-protected) need restoration attention.

Common Work in Fort Greene

Romanesque Revival rough-faced stone repair; ornamental cast iron fence restoration; Queen Anne cornice and bay window work; brownstone façade restoration; Fort Greene Park area LPC compliance.

LPC Note The Fort Greene Historic District has standard LPC oversight. The 2012 extension brought more properties under review — verify whether your specific address is in the original 1978 district or the 2012 extension, as some details of the review process differ slightly.
